چکیده
Numerical calculations of fluid dynamos powered by thermal convection in a rotating, electrically conducting spherical shell are analyzed. We find two regimes of nonreversing, strong field dynamos at Ekman number 10 -4 and Rayleigh numbers up to 11 times critical. In the strongly columnar regime, convection occurs only in the fluid exterior to the inner core tangent cylinder, in the form of narrow columnar vortices elongated parallel to the spin axis. Columnar convection contains large amounts of negative helicity in the northern hemisphere and positive helicity in the southern hemisphere and results in dynamo action above a certain Rayleigh number, through a macroscopic a 2 mechanism. These dynamos equilibrate by generating concentrated magnetic flux bundles that limit the kinetic energy of the convection columns. The dipole-dominated external field is formed by superposition of several flux bundles at middle and high latitudes. At low latitudes a pattern of reversed flux patches propagates in the retrograde direction, resulting in an apparent westward drift of the field in the equatorial region. At higher Rayleigh number we find a fully developed regime with convection inside the tangent cylinder consisting of polar upwelling and azimuthal thermal wind flows. These motions modify the dynamo by expelling poloidal flux from the poles and generating intense toroidal fields in the polar regions near the inner core. Convective dynamos in the fully developed regime exhibit characteristics that can be compared with the geomagnetic field, including concentrated flux bundles on the core-mantle boundary, polar minima in field intensity, and episodes of westward drift.

Direct Numerical Simulation of the Wake Flow Behind a Cylinder Using Random Vortex Method in Medium to High Reynolds Numbers
Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow behind a cylinder, wake flow, using the random vortex method for an incompressible fluid in two dimensions is presented. In the random vortex method, the primary variable is vorticity of the flow field. After generation on the cylinder wall, it is followed in two fractional time step in a Lagrangian system of coordinates, namely convection and diffu...
متن کاملGeodynamo Simulations—how Realistic Are They?
■ Abstract The past seven years have seen significant advances in computational simulations of convection and magnetic field generation in the Earth’s core. Although dynamically self-consistent models of the geodynamo have simulated magnetic fields that appear in some ways quite similar to the geomagnetic field, none are able to run in an Earth-like parameter regime because of the considerable ...

As the first phase of a series of monitoring and modeling studies of Iranian coastal areas, Chabahar Bay, located on the north coast of the Gulf of Oman, was under a comprehensive monitoring and modeling study in 2006-2007. The study included an extensive one-year field measurements program to help understanding the ongoing processes in the bay and provide inputs or boundary conditions and vali...
متن کاملOn the reflection of Alfvén waves and its implication for Earth’s core modeling
Alfvén waves propagate in electrically conducting fluids in the presence of a magnetic field. Their reflection properties depend on the ratio between the kinematic viscosity and the magnetic diffusivity of the fluid, also known as the magnetic Prandtl number Pm. In the special case Pm = 1, there is no reflection on an insulating, no-slip boundary, and the incoming wave energy is entirely dissip...
متن کاملGeodynamo α-effect derived from box simulations of rotating magnetoconvection
The equations for fully compressible rotating magnetoconvection are numerically solved in a Cartesian box assuming conditions roughly suitable for the geodynamo. The mean electromotive force describing the generation of mean magnetic flux by convective turbulence in the rotating fluid is directly calculated from the simulations, and the corresponding α-coefficients are derived. Due to the very ...
